In-Depth Book Reviews

The Delicate Yellow-foot Tortoise

By Tyler Monson, TurtleTimes.com

When I first saw this title, I thought how different can the yellow-foot be from the red-foot tortoise? Are they not similar? After reading this book I realized that yellow-foot tortoises have very different husbandry requirements indeed and my experience with red-foot tortoises was not enough for this delicate tortoise.

The Delicate Yellow-foot Tortoise is Volume 9 of the Tortoises of the World Series by Green Nature Books

I found a lot of sections contained information that made this book worth while. I found the breeding section to be quite surprising as well as useful. I felt the book was worth the cost, just from reading the breeding section. The tips on husbandry and care were worth its weight in gold. The success of this book is that you gain from both Richard's mistakes as well as his successes. He shares both his knowledge and the experience of other established yellow-foot keepers.

What's good:

  • The organization was good. Richard guides you through the A-Zs of the care required for yellow-foots.

  • Although you can some get the tips and experience from various sources, to have them all in one place is very handy.

  • I laughed, we laughed, we had a good time with Richard's unique style of writing and his shoot-from-the-hip style of humor. Although it might not be the most politically correct style of writing, it is indeed refreshing to read from a keeper who shares his experience and research rather than the more commonly scientific approach. With that said Richard has done a lot of research for this book.

  • The book is interspersed with tips that would have any yellow-foot owner thinking about their current husbandry routine and if they should implement any changes.

  • Like all Green Nature Books titles there is a 30 day money back guarantee. I gave it an extra star for value as their is a guarantee.

What's not:

  • Although the book had some good enclosure guidelines for yellow-foots. It would have been nice to have seen a picture or a diagram of a proposed indoor or outdoor setups. Although a good effort was made to describe effective setups, space, requirements and security. The picture or diagram would of been a nice touch.

  • It might just be me, but when new turtle organizations on the Internet are mentioned in this recent publication and Turtle Times the largest turtle portal on the Internet is not, well who can blame me for sulking a little. That darn snake get all the credit! Maybe the next book... we can hope.

Conclusion:

I highly recommend this book to any reader who owns yellow-foots or is thinking of owning one. The book covers the entire foundation of yellow-foot husbandry without skipping important information. The best thing is the experience shared - for the expert tips alone, this book is really a steal! I would buy it.
