Weather or Not

Leave Comment
Frankie is not so smart when it comes to weather. But Frankie is also pretty smart about the weather. I can't decide. He has me completely bamboozled.

During the summer, Frankie is perfectly able to perceive growing temperatures due to sunlight and ambient heat. Smartly, he chooses the coolest spot in his backyard. He can even preceive...

Daytona Party

Every year for the last four years we have opened our doors for a party the day before the Daytona Reptile Show. Turtles, food, fun, and more turtles. This year was our best year for attendance with 23 guests. Lots of fun. Hopefully even more can make it. LisaD, we missed you  We plan on doing it next year the Thursday before the show as...

Blind Turtle and Myrtle-- the turtle takes a wife

The summer after Blackberry came to stay with me, another interesting resident came into my care. One morning an adult female eastern box turtle was found left anonymously in the overnight drop-box at the wildlife center where I worked at the time. She had no obvious injuries aside from the fact that she was missing one of her front legs. The...

Ed the Tiger

Ed loves eating. And I don't mean just eating. When I drop a pile of food on the floor for her she consumes it and walks around looking for more in a bored sort of what-else-is-there-to-do way. That's not the kind of eating I'm talking about. I am talking about the kind she does outside after she is warmed up to about 100 degrees from...

Mushrooms, the way to Emys' heart

Leave Comment
Today was the first day that Emys took food from my hand. I never would have expected that a white mushroom would be the food that would tempt him enough to eat from my hand. I guess that's my personal bias. I just don't go for mushrooms myself. But apparently Emys does :) The mushrooms were bought in a supermarket, not collected out...

New Map TURTLES!

So I just got my new turtles yesterday, one that belongs to my brother, one that is under my wing ;) well they've been real good, eating and playing, they would sleep at night when all the lights are off. i guess from the mood that they are still in, are that they are still a bit afraid of their new environment. however, that won't last...

Boxie terrorizes cat

Yesterday, our oldest cat pushes open the wedged-shut door and comes into the zen room while I am down on the floor reading and Scutes is soaking in her big turtle dish. Morphie strolls straight to the big sun-spot on the carpet, completely oblivious to the turtle, so I decide to allow him to stay, as long as he behaves himself. Scutes notes the...

Andante and his Apples

So today i got my very 1st tortoise. His name is Andante. Andante is an old musical term meaning "in moderately slow time", which frankly couldn't be much more perfect. Andante is a baby red-foot. He's about the darn cutest thing ever.

But i digress...

what should I do?

I have four desert tortoises and they have had babies the last three years. I am not exactly a professional turtle owner, but I have had pretty good luck so far. I have 4 babies and the youngest of them has "lost its tail". I am not sure if this is normal, but I have no idea what to do. Does anyone know? HELP

Turtle Talks turtle activity books Best Buy 15 award

“Turtle Talks” is a sea turtle conservation program that I created in 2001, at age eleven. It is an out of the box, traveling seminar that visits schools, libraries, and nature events in Florida. I authored a children’s sea turtle activity book and a gopher tortoise activity book, to accompany the program. There are now over 100,000 in print and...

Well, we made our adoption choice. A bit different than we'd initially anticipated.

The rescue that we adopted Sherman and Bradley from just happened to have another sulcata listed on their site. It said the adoption was pending. I went ahead and sent them an e-mail anyway and told them that if the adoption fell through we may be...

Since the first people to see him are all of you guys here on TT (which is funny because my daughter calls herself TT) :P I've decided to name him after my handle, Scute Carapace.
Say hello to the nice people, Scute.
Here is a more smooth, even painting of the shell. I also glossed it to make it look a little more natural. After all the...
