Introduction

Most species of turtles are threatened or endangered, or at very least, in steep population decline. This makes your job as a pet turtle owner very important. In addition to caring for your pet, once it reaches adulthood please consider (except of you have a slider, a sulcatta tortoise, or a common snapper) breeding it. This will please your pet and help save the earth. (Sliders, especially red-eared sliders, and sulcattas suffer from overpopulation and SHOULD NOT be bred. Other species rarity can be judged from the difficulty of getting them through rehoming, and their prices. MOST species SHOULD be bred, so if you plan to breed, pick one of those).

Vietnames Leaf Turtle Care Sheet

The following is written by a man who was the first to breed these turtles in captivity.

A member first introduced me to this species at the yearly New York Turtle and Tortoise Society show about five years ago when I caught a glimpse of a female being shown. The fact that this diminutive turtle was fully grown at about four inches and not a great deal was known about it’s husbandry, initially led me to try my hand. One of the things that I wanted to learn first hand was whether this species is temperature sexual dependent or CSD, as I have not found there to be literature on that point.

I now keep a breeding harem of one male and three females, and have had several clutches of eggs over the last four years with three live offspring and currently have four eggs incubating from two different clutches.
Males and females have some obvious distinguishing features. Males have much longer and thicker tails. There is an absence of coloring on the head the plastron is concave and the marginals when viewed from above are somewhat parallel. Females have a distinctive red and yellow striping on the side of the head, have slightly wider hips and the plastron is generally flat.

I house the turtles indoors during the winter and outdoors from the last May frost until sometime in October. Their outdoor enclosure is four foot long and three foot wide about 8” high with a screen cover. They have a shallow soaking pan about 1.5 to 2 inches deep always available. For substrate I use cypress mulch, kept damp in dry weather and provide cover in the form of half flowerpots and other places where they can hide completely from the others. They also seem to like having a high point from which to survey the area. Be aware they can and will climb like monkeys. Their enclosure is positioned so that only a corner of it will receive any direct sun. I try to keep them relatively cool and shaded. Their indoor enclosure is about 2’ X 4’ and about 12 inches high, with a computer fan set into a hole at one end and the other end open for cross ventilation. They have two soaking dishes, about two inches deep, which they will use for hours at an end, sometimes overnight. I use no supplemental heating and the house is kept at around 68 to 72 degrees all winter. I use UVB fluorescent tubes but have no real way of knowing whether this provides too little or too much radiation. Some of these bulbs can produce 100 microwatts per sq centimeter but I have found no literature that sites what would be considered a proper level. I employ cypress mulch, which I try to keep constantly damp with a layer of leaves on top to provide some cover in addition to various huts also provided for that purpose. There is nothing special about the day night cycles that I employ. Their lights get turned on and off when I get up and retire for the night.

I feed them snails, slugs, earthworms, night crawlers, crickets and some fruit mostly berries. Generally they are extremely aggressive eaters grabbing their prey and running off to one end of the enclosure to consume in peace.

There seems to be no fixed time of the year when egg laying has occurred. I have had clutches 3/31/02,5/16/02,7/25/02,7/30/02,9/1/02,10/29/03,11/16/03,9/5/04 and 10/9/04. Clutches have ranged in size from one to three eggs. By and large the eggs are laid sideways (two were laid upright) half buried and are extremely elongate. They weigh about ten grams on average, and chalk over in a banding fashion. I put the eggs into a hovabator incubator (still air) with the eggs laying half buried in a smaller container which is filled with damp vermiculite lightly covered with sphagnum moss also lightly dampened and with a loose lid on top. I have incubated successfully at 80 degrees with 80 to 90 percent humidity. My present clutch is incubating at about 78. Hovabators tend to be unreliable. I find that you must keep the incubator in an air-conditioned room summers to prevent the surrounding room temperature from exceeding what the incubator is set for. Failure to do this may have you cooking your eggs. The eggs generally pip 69 to 70 days with the hatchlings emerging within a few hours. Unlike Wood Turtles or Box turtles the hatchlings look like miniature adults. They range in weight from 8 to 9 grams and are about 1.5 inches SCL. I keep the neonates in the incubator for a few days and then transfer them to a terrarium with a substrate of wet sphagnum moss and a very shallow (about ½ inch of water) soaking trough. I use a small amount of supplemental heat in the winter. I find they usually feed with a few days and have had good luck feeding them either very small worms or night crawlers cut up into 1/8” long pieces. I have had very little luck feeding anything but live food to youngsters. They tend to not be very vigorous eaters initially but by two to three months, they will attack their food. They are fed in separate containers and allowed to eat at their leisure. Also, I allow them to eat all they want every day for the first few weeks. This is probably not an ideal schedule where it is my tendency to overfeed. The hatchlings, up until twenty-seven months retain the head coloring of adult females and to date I am not able to sex the offspring.

It has been my experience that wild caught animals must be quarantined and immediately seen by a veterinarian to insure they are healthy and free of intestinal parasites. I lost the first four males I had in short order and don’t know the reason for their failure to survive.
To date I have lost no females to illness.
