There have been a lot of questions lately about shipping. I thought I'd post a visual guide of how I ship.
The only thing different I'd do for turtles is wet the paper towel in the container.
The only other thing is if it's cool, I'd change the Keep out of Sun to Keep Warm

I'll add my 2 cents. Use a heat pack in the winter or a cold pack in the summer, but don't ship in case of extreme heat or cold. ;)

it seems beneficial, I am a bit skeptical on all the foam, and a plastic container. I guess shipping turtles is like fingerprints, its completely different from one another. Thanks for the pictures, they described without words what to do. Beginning turtle owners will take that to their own advantage. Well done.

Skeptical? Many of us have shipped hundreds of turtles this way with no problems. I ALWAYS ship in punched deli containers or berry containers. I put in 1 or 2 heatpacks depending on the destination (by 10:30 or noon...some places don't get 10:30 delivery). I prefer to use crumbled paper as opposed to packing peanuts but if I do use peanuts, I put in extra so the turtle's container isn't jostled around. I also want to add I wouldn't ship ANY OTHER WAY but DHL OVERNIGHT.

I mean they would have to if you label your boxes that way wouldnt they?

I label my boxes: "LIVE REPTILE - KEEP AWAY FROM HEAT OR COLD"

I would say pack it all up, and bring it to a drop-off center just before their normal pickup. They'll accept it. My local guy picks up at the mail center around the corner @ 4PM sharp every day. My turtles are there by 3:30 ready to go.

I have never had anyone tell me I couldn't ship turtles or tortoises. I always mark the boxes and none of the drivers that have come to pick up have ever not taken the box. You'll get the "we don't ship live animals" everytime you call someone at either DHL or UPS, yes UPS does ship live turtles and tortoises check out their website. So you just have to refer these people to their own website.

DHL does ship tortoises and select other animals. Michele Behrns was nice enough to email me the DHL waiver required to send these animals through them, after I was turned away more than once by my local DHL office. If anyone wants a copy, send me a message and I can email it over to you.

All you have to do is fill it out and fax it to DHL, and you are granted an "Approved Shipper" status. I took the form with me to the drop-off location just to avoid any confusion and avoid being turned away!

Hi,

That does sound a little high. I shipped a yellowfoot from New York to California earlier this year (probably weighed right around 18 pounds, too), and it cost me about a hundred bucks.

But you can get a price estimate yourself to see what is going on:

http://www.dhl-usa.com/ratecalculator/Hand...AY&nav=GetRates

He may be charging you for the cost of the box, heat packs and handling, too.

This may sound stupid, but is the wet paper towel for humidity?

Yes, but you'd only do it for water turtles.

And you shouldn't use a wet anything if the turtle or tortoise is going to be passing through any cold locations.

GOOD POINT! I don't wet the papertowels in the turtle's container if I'm shipping up North or back East after November 1 usually...the heat pack isn't going to do much good if they're sitting on a cold wet paper towel.

Right forgot about that :D . I don't ship when it gets cold so I don't have that problem.

I am wondering, if i pack my tortosie in the ways mentioend here, do i have to worry about the oxygen level? they are in the bag with foam around them in the box. Where do they get the oxygen they need?

Anything is, doesnt the little guy move around in the pull-string bag?

Is it possible to ship a turtle like this overseas? I've been hoping to find a Spotted Turtle breeder in Europe for some time now, but to no avail....
