Hello I have a 24 year old Red eared slider turtle... her name is Hallie.... I live in Prince Edward Island , Canada. The last time she did this I ended up with Type C Strep Throat normally (Very rarely found in humans) found in animals.. but she got better. Shes doing it again.. is really slow.. she looks like us when we are sick.. she just has the UGh.. sick looking feeling. As I am aware turtles are illegal on PEI and am afraid to take her to a vet.. The vet collage here has dealt with turtles that I know of before.. but I am not sure what to expect when I take her. Is there anything I can do myself to help her?

Respiratory infections in turtles occur from either an improper environment/diet or exposure to other ill turtles. They don't catch colds or the flu from humans; however humans can catch certain bacteria from turtles that may be harboring that bacteria; one example is salmonella. I am uncertain as to what your laws are in your area as to turtles but usually in many places it is illegal to harbor native turtles - a red-earred slider would not be native to your area. How long have you had Hallie? She may just need a bump up in her temperature but if she is exhibiting any wheezing or discharge from her nose or mouth, or develops swollen eyes, she needs vet attention. Some photos would help along with a description of how she is kept. That information will help us on here help you.
