AKA: Sternotherus odoratus
AKA: Stinkpot Musk
Proven pair of adult breeders. Male is pale gray with dark mottling, female is dark, almost chocolate brown. 2008 clutch of 7 produced a couple of really nice mottled hatchlings. I’ve kept one. The 2009 (9) and 2010 (8) clutches were predominantly dark brown / black. She laid a late fall clutch of 5 just before Christmas time – incubating those eggs.
Bought as adults online in 2006 as 2 separate purchases. The male came from an online store in Florida, the female came from a private breeder in the midwest. These two have been paired since acquisition and not kept in a breeding group. They can be bred in a large tank (mine is a 40L, 48” x 12” footprint), an outdoor pond, or a Wonderland tub. They have produced for me in all 3 environments.
Both in excellent health. The male packs on the fat every winter but loses it in the spring. Feeding on cut fish, shrimp, and worms. I have never brumated them.
I’m thinning the herd. I now have 10 musks altogether, including these two, another breeding group of 1.2, two sub-adults 1.1 coming into breeding age, and three hatchlings from 2010.
Common musks are the hardiest turtles I’ve ever kept. Shipping is no problem even this time of year. Acquiring them now will give you time to acclimate them for breeding in May or June.
